The story of Wawa starts well before the first convenience store opened. Long before online orders and mobile apps, the roots of Wawa trace back to 1803, when the original enterprise began as an iron foundry in New Jersey. By the early 20th century, the Wood family pioneers of the business shifted the focus to dairy farming, establishing a dairy operation in Wawa, Pennsylvania.
In 1902, George Wood purchased the Rocky Run Dairy Farm in Delaware County, PA, producing high-quality dairy products and becoming recognized for “doctor-certified” milk a big deal at a time when raw milk was common and safety was a concern.
However, as home milk delivery diminished in the 1960s, the company pivoted. The next generation, led by Grahame Wood, opened the first Wawa Food Market on April 16, 1964, in Folsom, PA marking the beginning of Wawa as a retail store rather than just a dairy brand.
